We all enjoy debating mock drafts, the excitement of holding a top pick, the thrill of believing your GM got the better end of a trade and the ability to pretend like you know something secret about that fifth round tight end prospect because you read on Wikipedia that he played lacrosse in high school.
Fans would be better off without the draft. Why? Well, market forces would help optimize team rosters. As long as there is a salary cap, revenue sharing, restricted free agency and the like, the draft actually skews the make-up of the league to disadvantage certain teams.
Imagine a world where Aaron Rodgers decided he didn’t want to play for the Packers because he didn’t want to ride the pine as Brett Favre still had a few good years left. There are professionals. Stop treating them like children.
If you want good television, then figure out a way to produce the rookie free agency experience. Heck, make this the new version of hard knocks.
